Calls to the Council.

INSTRUCTIONS FROM HOME. (from our own corrbspoxdevt.) Wki,lington, to-diy. The Earl of Glasgow hns received a cable from the Home Office telling him that ho must accept the advice of the Government re calls to the Council. Later. — A statement with respect to the Marquis of Ripon'a cable message is to be made in the House at 7. 30. The Governor, is understood to have intimated his pre- l paredness to act on the advice the Executive may tender him. What the nature of this advice may be is unknown at present, but a good many profess to think that in place of making calls at present, Government will not tender any advice before the session terminateß, when, if compromises on their policy Bills have failed, they will recommend an appeal to the country. Government will certainly not give way on the Electoral Bill, either as regards electoral rights for women or splitting up city electorates, and it remains to be seen whether the Council will continue firm on these amendments of the Electoral Bill. Members on reflection say that Lord Glasgow is not called on to resign, for coming here as a stranger he was bound to act on the advice con tamed in tho private memorandum left by Lord Onslow. (Per Press Association.) The Governor has received a cable from the Colonial Office to-day instructing him to accept the advice of his Ministers respecting the appointments to the Legislative Council. The Premier will make a statement in the House this afternoon. It is understood tho Governor in prepared to make twelve appointments at once, bufc Minister refuse at present to say what cause they propose to take. Later.— The Premier will not be able to attend the House to-day, having had to take to his bed again.
