Alleged Attempted Suicide.
Before Mr Booth, R.M. , this morning Thomas Solomon, a wheelwright, was charged on the information of the police with attempted suicide. The following evidence was called : — George Arundell stated he was a settler at Tiniroto. Saw the accused last night at about 9 o'clock. Witness was walking down Gladstone road when he heard someone scream in a right-of-way leading to the house in which Solomon was living. It was a woman, and she asked witness to go in and stop her father who was trying to do away with himself. Witness went down to the house and entered by the back door, which was open. Saw the accused iv the doorway of the front part of the house with a knife in his hand. He was flourishing it about. He thought he mighb injure himself and seized him by the wrist. Accused had just received a great shock a few minutes before by hearing of the death of his daughter. There were no marks or cuts on his handa. He was nervous and deranged. He appeared as though he wanted to get at some man. He did not appear to be suffering from the effects of drink. For all witness knew the knife might have been intended for some man who had done him an injury. The accused did not wish to ask witness any questions as he did not recollect anything in connection with the matter. This was all the evidence, and His Worship dismissed the case. Sergt. Moore stated that the man had been drinking heavily of late, and he thought that a prohibition order might be issued against Solomon for 12 months. It was the wish of accused that this should be done. His Worship nude the order asked for.
