Hunt Meeting.

Thb mounted paper-chase at Whatatutu on Tuesday was a great success. The jumps put up by Mr Frank Arthur were undoubtedly the best thnt have been gone over yet, and were helped by the dry ground making the taking off so good. A start was made about 12 o'clock. There were 26 riders, and a large number of lookers on. Mr Frank Arthur, on WarriKal, led the way, closely followed by Mrs G. L. Sunderland, Miss Reynolds, Miss Norah Reynolds (the only ladies who were out). 4t the first check there were only sixteen turned up, the stiffness of the jump and the pace accounting for several spills. They then wont down a steep hill at a foot pace, and took up the running again on the flat. All the horses jumped well, the last jump on to the road near the. Oil Springs' Hotel beinc,' about the stillest of the lot, and the taking off very soft However, with the exception of a baulk or two, it was got over without accident. There was a sod wall with a deep wide ditch on the landing side, which was avoided by all the riders with the exception of Messrs Frank Arthur, Withered, Sherratt, and Penny. At the 6nisli three hearty cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Frank Arthur, and The whole party adjourned to the homestead at Whatatutu for lunch. After lunch a small purse was made up for a prize for a steeplechase open to Pakehas and Maoris, the course to be the snuio as that gone over in the morning. Five Pakehas and seven Maoris entered for it. The first two jumps were hurdles, and all got over safely ; but at the next, a stiff double over the road, all refused or fell, with the exception of Charon, Troubadour, and Charley. Some of the others eventually got over, but had lost too much ground to have any say in the race. The three left in jumped faultlessly right through, and gave the lookers-on an excitinw"finish. Charon led to the last jump •vnd baulked ; Troubadour gob over, but slipped oil landing and lost his rider ; Charon was quickly wheeled round, and got over the second time junt in front of old Charley ; Charon, ridden by Mr Penny, takiim first money ; and Charley, ridden by Mr Pritcbard, yetting second. This finished up a good day's fun.
