He pointed out that one great object of his remaining years of life was to secure Home Rule for Ireland. The statement that the Pope has instructed Archbishop Vau^hin not to interfere in political matters is denied. In the House <>t Commons Mr Balfour stated that the withdraw*] of thu East African Company from Uganda did not imply abandonment of thu country by England, within whose sphere it lies. On the contrary a survey of the railway line from Mombassa inland was rapidly proceeding. The wool sales continue brisk. All sorts are very firm. American buyers are operating freely. The Bradford market, however, does not respond to the movement in London. Twelve thousand delegates will be present at the Ulster Conference. The guarantee fund amounts to £17,000. Two hundred thousand tickets have been issued for the meeting to-morrow, and great enthusiasm is being shown over the whole of Ireland. At the meeting of creditors of the Oriental Bank the depo itors passed a resolution in favor of voluntary liquidation. The chairman said it was a grave mistake to start business in Australia, where they were helplessly overshadowed by the great institutions of that country. (Received Jane 18, 10.50 a.m.) Mr Gladstone's interview with the eight hour deputation was an animated one, and in the discussion he combated every statement advanced by the delegates. Mr Gladstone declared that he would be disgraced and sink to the lowest point possible for the most unprincipled to fall, if he forsook Home Rule in favor of other matters. The Times applauds Mr Gladstone for refusing to commit himself to the demands of the Trades Council. The Standard considers that the unhappy champions have been led from point to point, until they are reduced to floundering. "Earl Spencer sells all the Thorpe library owing to depression in agriculture. In the House of Commons the Irish Free Education Bill has been read a third time. A select committee recommends Government to purchase the trunk lines and telephone companies. PARIS, June 16. France has notified the Powers that she intends blockading the Dahomey coast. MADRID, June 17. The Spanish Government is much irritated at the supposed further concessions to England by the Sultan of Morocco. SINGAPORE, Juke 17. It is reported that the Raub mines will be closed down unless restored. NEW YORK, June 16. W. Redmond is collecting money in New York for the election campaign in Ireland, and so far donations are flowing in freely. June 17.— A tornado has visited south Minnesota, destroying houses, school and farm buildings. Forty persons were killed. A train was derailed and 100 peop'e were killed. A similar disaster, attended |with serious loss of life, is reported from the provinces of Ontario and Quebec.
