Parliament will probably be convened for the end of May or the first week in June. Government offices close to-night till Tuesday morning. The services of Inspector Thomson, of the Wellington police, are to be retained. AUCKLAND, To-day. The Fire Brigade Conference has closed. Lieut. Smith (Christchurch) was elected presidont,and sub-Superintendent Gilbard (Napier) secretary. It was decided to hold the next Conference at Christchurch. Sir George Grey was nominated for the Newton seat yeßterday. DUNEDIN, To-day. At the half-yearly meeting of the Colonial Bank, the report declaring a dividend of 7£ per cent, was carried. NAPIER, To-day. The Admiralty Court finished taking evidence in the Rangitikei salvage case last evening, but the Chief Justice reservod his decision until after hearing the legal arguments in Wellington. INVERCARGILL, To-day. The Southern Cross Masonic Lodge, N.Z.C., passed a resolution urging Lord Onslow to permit himself to be nominated Grand Master. GREYMOUTH, To-day. Prospecting operations at Blackball coal lease yesterday resulted in striking a coal seam. It is good coal, and it dips out, so that it can be worked at the level free of drainage, entailing no cost. It ia a large field.
