The Victoria Lodge of Freemasons at an emergency meeting last evening unanimously passed resolutions expressing regret at the difference existing between tho lodges of the colony during the last twelve months, and its hearty approval of the efforts of Lord Onslow to promote a better understanding, and more fraternal feeling, and respectfully urging His Excellency to allow himself to be nominated for the position of Grand Master at the next communication of the Grand Lodge to be held at Invercargill on the tenth of April. * WELLINGTON. To-n.vr. Tho Premier and Minister of Education paid a visit to the Austrian warship Saida this morning. The Saida sailed for Auckland at noon. After a brief stay there she proceeds to America. MANAIA, To-day. Te Whiti's annual meeting of Natives from the whole coast took place at Parihaka last week, but nothing of any interest is reported. ! AUCKLAND, To-day. A discovery of gold in the Alameda licensed district, Puhipuhi, is reported. The first stone assayed yielded, it is said, 28oz. of gold per ton, and a party of several persons then went out to the field and brake down the reef, dueling rich gold-bearing stono. The claim is next to the Prospectors' claim. Shares in the Alameda have rapidly risen in price, A gum dealer named Thos. Lyons fell overboard from a yacht in tho Wairoa river and was drowned. He had been drinking heavily. An old man named Patrick O'Briun, v stonebreaker at the Mount Eden quarries, has beem found dead. **The Masonic Hall, Courthouse, and Warden 'B oft)ce at Whangarei have been bqrned down. EEEFTON To-day. Tho Hon. Mr Seddon, Minister of Mines, left for Greynu uth this morning after having met with a most cordial reception hero. Lust night he risited tho School of Mines, and addressing the audience there stated he should recomcommend Government after prqvidiug fur a lecturer to subsidise the institution in an amount equal to the sums subscribed by the public for that purpose. Mr Seddon waß entertained at a banquet Jast iiight, when between sixty and seventy people wero present He briefly outlined the intended policy of the Ministry and stated they would abolish the property tax, adopt graduated land tax, and classify the civil service.
