The Government have not yet received any definite information from the AgentGeneral re direct mail service with England. Th« Postmaster- General declares that the request of the Imperial Government that a reduction to 2§d should be made by the Brindisi rout© Is altogether out of the question, as the rate is already fixed by Parliament, and the colony is afe present losing by matter sent that way. Mr Mitchelson has little doubt that the two Companies, the N.Z.S. Co and the Shaw, Savill Co, will accept the terms of Government, as it means either L9OOO or L2OOO to them, the first mentioned amount being under the terms offered by Governments. There is little probability that the question of erecting detaohed strong room 3 for the accommodation of Government records, etc., will be decided until next Parliament meets. It appears fchab • the estimate of the cost is something like L 17,000 for fire proof towers at the back 1 of the main buildings, and Ministers are disinclined to proceed with the work without Parliamentary sanotion. Mr F. J. Moss, M.H.R. for Parnell, has been offered and accepted tho position of British Resident afc Raratonga. : - The Appeal Court opened this morning, Mr Justice Oonnoly being absent, having been called to Blenheim owing to family bereavement. The Wanganui caso of" Watt v. the Attorney-General was argued. This was an appeal from the decision of the Chief Justioe. The appeal was dig- : missed. A number of the labor party on strike have applied to Government to be allowed to take up land on special settlement conditions. Government have a number of special reports and pamphlets dealing with phylloxera, which they are having abridged for distribution through the colony. - AUCKLAND, To-day. Early this morning John Webster, third son of Malcolm Webster, a well-known old citizen, shot himself through the head with a rifle % He was heard to leave the house at four o'clock, and nob having returned an hour later, his brother went to look for him, and heard a shot from an unoccupied house close by. Death was instantataneous. Deceased was 23 years of nge, and was a fine young fellow and a general favorite. Twelve months ago he met with a fall on the back of his head, and ever since he has been subject to fits of depression.
