THE LABOR AGITATION
NEW ZEALAND. [Per Press Association.] Auckland, to-day. In opening the annual Diocesan Synod yesterday, Bishop Cowio spoke of the present labor difficulty, find said it was conceded by all reasonable men that one section of the community had as much right as another to unite in guilds or associations for their common advantage, so long as that advantage was not inimical to the well being of any other law-abiding section of people. At whatever present cost we should resist all legislation that would infringe tho right of personal liberty in things allowable, or tolerate tyranny of any one combination of citizens over another. Moreover individuals or communities should not commit the keeping of their consciences to any human authority, however exalted. Several of the lumpers who were out on strike have applied at the Union Company's offices for work, but were not taken on, as there were no vacancies. Christchuuch, to-day. A meeting took place yesterday between the Shipping Committee which works Port Lyttelton and the authorised representatives of the Miners' Union of New Zealand, the Federated Wharf Laborers, and the Seamen's Unions. The proceedings were kept strictly private, bub it is believed the result will practically terminate the strike.
