At a meeting of the Steamship Owners' Association it was decided to ascertain the views of all Steamship Companies in Australasia on the subject of amalgamation. Tt is understood the Union Company will bo included. Owing to the directoi'ate of one company being in London, it is expected three months will elapse before the opinion of all can be obtained. If the replies are favorable to the project, a committee will probably be appointed to enquire into the possibility of devising a scheme for amalgamation. The Committee of the Association, generally speaking, is in favor of it. The cooks and sto wards have submitted to tho steamship owners the revised rules and regulations adopted at the federal meetintf in October. One point is the exemption from liability for loss of plate belouginsf to vessels. The owners consider an important principle is involved in their claim. Certain concessions for overtime are also required. The local Committee of the Union has submitted a scale for an increase of wages by 15s to LI per month for various classes of cooks and stewards. The owners have arrived at no decision as yet. Tho wha^rf laborers have also passed now rules, which they are about to submit to the steamship owners. No definite information is available, but it is understood an increase of Is per day is involved for men employed by the day and a much larger increase for permanent hands, also sonje arrangement of overtime. New demands aro made as to the payment for special time.
