SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.

The machinery of the inclined plane railway at Mount Auburn, Cincinnati, which reaches a height of 250 to 300 feet in a space of 1000 feet, became deranged on October loth, and the cable snapped with a full car at the head of the incline. The car rushed to the bottom with fearful velocity, carrying its human freight with it, and broke into a million pieces. Nearly all the occupants,of whom there were nine, were killed. The truck itself and the floor formed a shapeless wreck, which held the bleeding and mangled bodies of the passengers. The finance committee of the World's Fair, to be held in New York in 1890, adopted a resolution on October Bth recommending that steps lie taken to raise a preliminary fund of 5,000,000 dols. A scheme is in progress to colonise several States in Mexico with negros from Texas and other parts of the United States. Denver was partially burned on October 13th by an electric wire falling on a telephone wire. It burned a switchboard of 5000 wires, and the telephone exchange was damaged to the extent of 8000 dollars. The city had to remain without telephone service for two weeks. The legal costs of the Irish side of the Parnell Commission, including the expenses of witnesses and reporters, are covered by the indemnity fund. Sir Chas. Russell received LIOOO for preparing briefs in addition to LSO daily. Messrs Reid and Lockwood each received LSOO. The expenses of the Times largely exceed those of the Irish side. At Shields on October 4th, while the Italian armoured warship Formidable was loading gunpowder and cartridges, the hoisting machinery became unmanageable, and some packages of cartridges dropped from a considerable height to the deck of vessel. A terrific explosion followed. One naval officer and several men were instantly killed, and a number of others wounded.
