A TOWN HALF DESTROYED.
THE RUINS TAKE FIRE.
300 KILLED AND INJURED. [Per Press Association. — Copyright.] (Received February 21, 8.45 p.m.) New York, Feb. 20. Intelligence has been received of a disastrous cyclone which has 3wepb through the State of Illinois on Sunday afternoon. Half of the town of Mount Vernon, capital of Jefferson County, was destroyed, and the ruins taking fire an awful panic ensued. The flames spread with wonderful rapidity, and a great many persons were burned bo death. Fortunately for the safety of thai; portion of the town which had ©scaped the fury of tho cyclone, a heavy rain set in and quenched the flames. Over one hundred people wore killed and fully two hundred injured by falling houses, etc. A good deal of destitution prevails, and many families have, now iost all of the.r possessions.
It hasbeen decided in Madrid bhat no theatre is to be allowed to open iti doors next winter unless it is. lighted by electiici!y.
