STRIKING OF THE KAWITIRI
THE MAGISTERIAL ENQUIRY. WBLLrxcixo.v, to-day. A Magisterial enquiry iuto the circumstances attending "the striking of the Kawitiri on Kangitoto Island was concluded on Tuesday evening, and the Court give judgment as follows : — The course given by Captain Metcalf was safe, though close to the Jag rocks. After passing the Jag rocks the course ought not to have been altered by Captain Metcalf to clear Rangitoto Island, and the Court considers that gross negligence of duty was displayed by Captain Metcalf not being on aeck from Jackson's Head to Stephen's Island, the navigation being dangerous and the distance being but '23 miles. We suspend his certificate for one month. The chief officer, Mr H. Abbott, we suspend 1113 certificate for three months, owing to gross carelessness in not calling Captain Metcalf when thick weather came on, in not slowing tho engines, and in not taking any precaution in ascertaining the distance run. The costs of the enquiry, £10 10s, were ordered to be paid by tho captain and chief ohVer. \
