♦- THE VICTORIAN ELECTIONS. TASMANIA AND N.S.W. Melbourne, March 5. The general election took place to-day. The complete returns for twenty-eight electorates are to hand. So far twenty-two supporters of the Coalition Ministry have been returned, including Mr Walker, Commissioner of Customs, Mr Pearson, Minister of Education, Mr Nimmo, Minister of Public Works, and Mr Davies, who has a seat in the Cabinet without portfolio. The following are among the more prominent Ministerial supporters elected : — Messrs Langridgo, Coppen, Zox, Tucker, and Bosisto. Thirteen Opposition members have been elected, including Messrs Bent, Goldsmith, Munro, Mclntyre, A. T. Clark, and Colonel Smith. Eight members have been returned aB Indep endent. Mr James Mirams was rejected by the Collingwood electorate, and Sir Charles Macmahon retired. Sydney, to-day. From approximate returns now to hand it appears that fifty-four supporters of the Coalition Ministry have been returned against eighteen declared Opposition members, and fourteen Independents. "" All the Ministers have been elected with the exception of Mr James, Minister of Mines, who was defeated by a small majority. Among the prominent members elected are Messrs Harper, and Madden (Constitutionalists), Mr Patterson (Opposition) and Messrs Wood and Lawlor (Independents). Among the rejected candidates are found Messrs Langton, Duffy, Angus, Maekay, and Fincham. All the candidates who stood on the labor ticket suffered defeat. The elections passed off quietly, no signs of disorder being visible at any polling place. It is not considered likely that the return of any of the Ministry seeking reelection in consequence of assuming office will be opposed. Hobart, to-day. The Hon. Dr Agnew M.L.C , being unable to form a Ministry, has relinquished the task, and Mr Dodds, Attorney-Gen-eral in the late Administration, has been charged with the formation of a Ministry. The American col jny in Paris number s about 3000 people, but iho shopkeepers say it is worth more to trade of tta French capital than its 30,000 Germara and 28,000 Italians combined.
