POVERTY BAY HORTICULTURAL AND FLORICULTURAL SOCIETY.
The third annual meeting of the alove Society was held at the Good Templars' Hall on Saturday evening, Dr. Pollen presiding. There was but a limited attendance.
The minutes of thr, previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the chairman stated that he had seen Captain Tucker (Vice-President) during the ajternoon, who regretted that he oould not attend the meeting, but his sympathies were with the Society, and he would give some prizes.
The following report, and the balance sheet, were then read and confirmed : —
Gisborne, September 12th, 1883. — The Committee of the Horticultural Society ! have much pleasure in, submitting the annexed balance-sheet for your approval, j and desire to express their thanks to the public for the encouragement given to the efforts of so desirabltt an institution. The people ai Poverty Bay have reason to congratulate themselves on the success of the flower shows that, have been hold, during <>he Kit three years. The puhlta hitherto have responded liberally, the ladies especially, by thoir presence at the shows, and the prizes they have so willingly given for the promotion of floriculture ; and last, but not least, the exertions of the committees in the management of the socfc&y, has so far boen satisfactory. The balancesheet shows a sum of L^ft 10s 2d in haud at the commencement of last year's annual meeting ; 'the amount received for subscribers' tickets, L 8 ; cash received for special prizes, LlO ; door money and auction sale of flowers and vegetable^ &18 5a ; making a total of L4ti( 1&> 84. Against this, prizes amounting to 1,20 were given away, a,nd the expenses of management amounted to Ll7 IQs 9d j leaving % balance in hand of L 8 18s lid. Besides the L2O uash given away in prizes, there were also several articles, of the total value o| h\s 10s, given by our storekeepers^ which in most iustances is better $pj>rectate.d than cash. The aw»r^ ft »ade gay» general satisfaction, the judges remarking that (Uff^o.uU.ies occurred often in arriving at a deoiaion because of the general excellence of the entries. Several items mentioned in the various classes failed to bring forth competition, and it wauld be as well to eliminate those, exhibits in, our next schedule. The question of expenses in the management will also require careful consideration, and the new committee would perhaps devise Borne some other untried means of augrn.en.ting the funds. The retiring convn»tt<ee are eligible for re-elec-tion^ and j should: like to see the majority re-elected. Success has attended their efforts, and hope that this forthcoming seaaott may prove even more so.— For the Committee, \V. L. File, Hon. Sec.
The next business was the election, of a working committee for the preaent year. — It was proposed, secomied, and carried unanimously that %he old committee, with the exception, of Mr G. Johns tone and Mr Isaac Tteylqr, be re-elected. — Mr. H. J. Buahnelf and Mr Chudley, of Qbristehurch, were elected to, take their places . The, following are the officers for the enauing year : — President : Dr. H. Pollen ; Vioe-Presidcnt : Capt. W. Tucker ; Treas-
urer •. W. Good ; Secretary : W. L. File ; Committee : Messrs H. J. Bushnell, A. G. Croll, W. Tharr.itt, B. Bently, H. Bull, — Chudley, J. Parker and S. Stevenson.

During the evening several special prizes were promised for various exhibits.
