ORMOND LETTER.

(from our own correspondent.)

September 17, 1883. The rains during the past week have caused a good fresh in the river, rendering the crossings very deep ; in fact, impassable for any dray traffic. Koad works nave been quite at a standstill. It is a source of gratification to know that the roads in this district will shortly be metalled and put into a ship-shape manner, and not before required. Tlio present state of the road from tlie Mnhunga bridge to the foot of Kaiteratahi, is literally a bog. lam happy to state that the late freshes in the Waipoa river have, to a certain extent, given a good test to Mr D. McLeod's works, on the banks of the river in the township. The willows planted are growing fast, and the roots they have made are really surprising. Independently of this, the banks seem to be gaining silt, and the course of the current appears to be taking an. outward tendency. Mr Mullooly's entire, our only local horse, Prince Arthur 111, paraded the towuship on Saturday, and, as far as I hear from criticism, is said to fee in fair form.

On Saturday ovening a meeting was held at tho Ormond hotel for the purpose of forming a Committee to carry on the annual Caledonian sports, Mr J. M. Bidgood occupying the chair, who opened the proceedings tiy explaining the nature of this mooting. Mr E. 1\ Paviour was appointed Secretary to the Committees. The sports will be held on N^ew Year's Day in Ormond, the plaoe to bo appointed by the Committee at some future date. The following gentlemen were elected a committee : — Messrs J. M. Bidgood (Chairman). Chas. Gardiner, D. McLeod, Wm, McKay, E. O'Divyer, J. Murphy, a^d, F. Benson, with power to add their number. The Secretary was instructed to write, to the following gentlemen, requesting them to kindly act as committee-men in conjunction with those already »pPoi'^d /T M ? 88 ™; W. Curqo. f. M,aynara, E jfi.
