Blue Ribbon Army meeting this evening. It is expected that the new Library Buildings will be opened about Oct. 15. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Harbor Board will be held to-morrow evening. The Horticultural and Flonoultural Society propose holding their show about the middle of November. Mr. Charles Evans, Te Arai, gives notice that any stock found running ou Tttpitone will be impounded. The state of the crossings at Makaraka is such as to render locomotion unsafe, aud should receive the immediate attention of the County Council. The Gisborne portion of the English and American mails, which arrived at Auckland yesterday, will be despatched to-night by the 8.8. Taiaroa, which leaves Auckland at 6 p.m.

The s.s. Doric, direct from Plymouth, arrived in Aucklaud on Saturday evening. Particulars of the arrival will bo found in our telegra'" B -

The first drill in connection with the new Fire Brigado will be held on Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock, when wo hope to see all the members who have joined present.

The locomotive lately used in the gravel contract has been successfully removed from the line down to the front of Mr. Brown's engineering shop in Peel street, under whose hands she will nndergo a thorough repairing.

The Makaraka Quadrille Assembly will meet to-morrow evening. Tho long-night was last week postponed in consequence of the wet weather and the indisposition of the M.C. A good programme is provided for to-morrow evening.

At the R. M. Court on Saturday John Ponsford, the contractor for the new library buildings, was charged with negligently allowing a fire to be lit of inflaminaole material behind the building. It being found that Mr Ponsford was in ignorance of the fire being lit, the case was withdrawn.

Messrs. Fraser and Wyllie will hold their next sale at Makaraka on Wednesday. There are 50 head of cattle to be offered, comprising steers, heifers, and cows, from yearlings upwards. They will also offer the well-known imported bull "Robin Adair," by "Robin Hood." In the miscellaneous entries will be found a tip-dray, in excellent repair.

Whilst improvements are being done, and the carpenters are about, I will put every day & portion of Combs and Co.'s bankrupt stock to auction, to be sold without reserve and regardless of cost, up in suitable lots, to mako room for new spring and summer stock. — J. Castle (late Combs and Co. )

Ladies and otheis contributing in kind towards tho supper at the Hospital Ball, are requested to have all uncooked promised subscriptions ready by Wednesday next, when the caterer will be round. A series of special services was commenced yesterday at the Wesleyan Church where the proceedings were conducted by the Rev. J. T. Pinfold. Meetings for prayer will be held every evening this week. The Rev. W. Salrer, formerly a pastor of the church, is expected to preach next Sunday, morning and evening, aud continue the services next week.

The severance of Mr. John Drummond'a connection with the Borough Council and Harbor Board, will not deprive the town and district of the services of that gentleman as a civil engineer. He announces in another column that he intends resuming the practice of his profession as a oivil ongineer and surveyor on and after tho 30th inst. We have no doubt, as Mr. Drummond's abilities are well-known, but that he will receive a good share of public support.

The Poverty Bay Pastoral and Agricultural Society will hold its annual show on Tuesday, October 23rd. All entries must be made a week prior to this date, in order to afford the Committee faculties to prepare a catalogue which is to be printed. The entries also those for hacks ann jumping. Thore will be no post entries this year. It is to be hoped that intending exhibitors will do all in their power to aid the Committee in the carrying out of their programme

It was said of a certain philanthropical association, for persistence, its members were at it, and were always at it. Now only a portion of this is applicable to J. Cantlic's sale of Comb 3 and Co.'s bankrupt stock. I certainly have been at it', and am now about to be at it again for a few days longer, but I do not mean to be always at it.— J. A report on the analysis of New Zealand antimony ore, made in London by Mr. Edgar Jackson, F. 1.5., has been received by Mr. Bayfield, of Nebon. The report states that the ore in question, which was found at Reef ton, contains 59 56 per cent, of metallic antimony, together with a trace of gold.

The result of the refrigerating meat business in Duuedin is that the retail price of mutton has advanced to five pence per pound.

One of the cases for hearing at the civil sittings of the Supreme Court in Wellington is an action brought by Mrs. George Dickson against the New Zealand Acciddent Insurance Company, to recover the sum of £500 on a policy that was taken out in the office of that company.

An inquest has been held at Ormondville to enquire into the circumstances surrounding the death of an unfortunate woman named Prentisa, who died on the 10th inst. The ovidence taken was to tho effect that deceased had given birth to twins six days previously, and had been attended by no one but her husband. The children were dead when born, and deceased sank lower and lower, and died at 7 a. in. on Tuesday last. It also transpired that deceased's husband had attended her on four previous occasions of confiromont. The jury returned a verdict that deceased died in consequenco of a difficult confinement, with a rider that her husband was greatly to blame for not calling in medical assistance.
