THE DINNER
A Dinner given to the judges in the Masonic Hotel in the evening was attended principally by members of the Society, and but by two townspeople which was made, and very rightly too, a subject of comment by some speakers. We believe the impression was that the dinner was exclusively for the Society, and hence the abstention of many who undoubtedly should have put in an appearance. After the viands (which were served in host Page's well-known style) were discussed, the following toasts were proposed by Mr. G. L. Sunderland, President of the Society— "The Queen." "The Judges." In proposing the latter, the Chairman said that the task of the judges was usually a thankless one, but in this instance they had done their duty very well, and that there was less grumbling at the awards than on previous occasions. On the whole the Show might be considered a very successful one, especially in respect to the exhibits of horses. He hoped in time, they would obtain one which would dp credit to the district. Mr. G. Rymer, of Napier, responded on behalf of the judes of horse stock. He said he had been connected with this district for the last 20 years. ' He had during the last few years taken a deep interest in its progress, and had intended to make Poverty Bay his home. If he did, he would become a good member and a good worker. They wanted good workers. There appeared to be several hangers back — men who had good stock, who did not exhibit. Poverty Bay had had kicks and buffets on every side, and at present was under a cloud, but if they worked well together hand in hand they would overcome all difficulties. Mr. A. McLean also briefly responded. Mr. 0. Evan3 gave the health of the successful winners, which wag responded to by Messrs J. B. Poynter, G. L. Suriderland, and W. Black. "The successful" was proposed, but there were none present to respond. The other toasts were " The President and Committee," " The Press," " County Councillors," Past President" J. B. Poynter, "Kindred Associations," "The Outlying Districts," and " The Ladies." There were many subjects of interest incidentally mentioned at the dinner, which, from want of space, we cannot now notice. Songs were contributed by Messrs. Dufaur, J. G. Henderson, E. Cameron, and W. K. Chambers, the proceedings terminating at 11 p.m. with God save the Queen.
