House of Representatives.
The House met yesterday at 2.30. Mr. Kelly brought up a report on Ehrenfried's petition complaining t/hat the Licensing Bench at the Thames refused renewal of licenses to five public-houses. The Committee recom-' mended the House not to interfere. Leave was granted to the Hon. J. Biyce to introduce the Maori Prisoners Detention Bill. The Taranaki Companies Bill passed through. Committee. The District Courts, Act j^mendment Bill, - and justices of* the PJeace Act Amendment' Bill was withdrawn. The Fire' Brigades^ Bs\, j Hospitals and Charitable \ Aidj JBill were reported without amendment,; and were read -a second time; The University Bill for establishing universities and colleges in the North Island was corainitte'd. The first clause having been passed, the Hon. Mr. Kollestbri moved that progress be reported on the grounds that the Bill proposed an expenditure which the Colony could not -afford. , A very long discussion ensued*. 1 ' Ultimately the 'motion was carajiedf and consequently the Bill was shelved.' Mr. Tole was the introducer of the Bill.
The Otago Harbor Empowering Bill ;was' read a third time and passed. Mr. 'Hutchison moved the committal , of the ., Chinese Immigration Bill. | The Hon. Major Atkinson said-ihis :■ was. a, matter the Government should deal with, and they were in cbmniunication with other colonies for concerted action on the subject./ A motion for committal was negatived on the voices. The Deceased Wife's Sister Marriage Bill was read a second time on a division by 27 to 9. The House adjourned at 12.45.
The Public Accounts Committee reported there was nothing irregular iv the payment of ,£BOO extra in the Waka Maori case.
