HORTCULTURAL AND FLORICULTURAL SOCIETY.

Ik accordance with an advertisement which had been inserted in the Herald, a meeting was held in the Masonic Hall, last evening, for the purpose of taking the initiatory steps, and adopting measures for establishing; a Horticultural and Floricultural Society in Gisborne. The attendance was not so large as could have been wished ; but there were a numbor of persons in the Hall who are well known as enthusiastic amateurs, either as horticulturists or growers of pot and garden flowers. The Chair was occupied by Captain Porter, who made a very excellent address in favor of furthering the object for whch the meeting had been called. We have not room for a report in the present issue ; but at the close of the address the chairman was loudly applauded. Mr. B. Sharriff (Town Clerk), after reading an extract of great interest from a Christchurch paper on Horticulture and Floriculture, then moved : — " That in the opinion of this meeting, the time has arrived, when it is expedient to form a Horticultural and Floricultural Society in Gisborne ; that such society be now started, to be called " The Gisborne Horticultural and Floricultural Society ; that such society be open to all people — either town or country ; that the entrance fee be 2s. 6A., and iuolude the first year's subscription." Seconded by Mr. Isaac Taylor, and carried unanimously. It was next moved by Mr. I. Taylor, and seconded by Mr. W. Good : — "That the following gentlemen be appointed a Provisional Committee to carry out the first requirements for the due establishment of the society : — Messrs Bull, Sherriff, Nash, Hill. Adams, G. Stevenson, Taylor, Good, Bently, W. Adair, and J. Hume."

The resolution was carried unanimously. About thirty persons set down their names as subscribers. Mr. Sherriff will send subscription lists to members of the Provisional Committee to be filled up.
