CHRISTCHURCH

This Day,

At the Supreme Court yesterday, the libel cases against the Ashburton Mail and the Otago Daily Times, were withdrawn. Mr. Stead, the prosecutor in the Otago Daily Times case, has handed to the Press letters from his attorneys, showing that after advising that the prosecntion would lie, he was suddenly informed thafc it was useless to go on. Mr. Fenwick, managing director of the Otago Daily Times Company, was not advised of the withdrawal, and arrived here last night, having his journey for nothing. The case of the two lads who pleaded guilty to putting a log of wood on the railway line, is held over by Judge Johnston until he has consulted his brother judges.
