McKay, reqesting employment on the works within the Borough the Council directed that he apply to the Engineer to whom the matter would be referred. Several Councillors were of opinion that no cognisance should be taken of the application as they might possibly be inundated with many more of a similar kind. engineer's report. On the report being read, the Conncil decided, on the Engineer's recommendation, to pass the progress payment on the contract for the supply of metal, which it was had stated considerably improved in quality. Reports. The Inspector of Weights and Measures, Fire, and Nuisances, reported as follows : — That he had with respect to weights and measures, adjusted several for tradesmen during the month, and as Fire Inspector he had summoned two .persons for lightning fires outside their dwellings, and that in each case, the Resident Magistrate gave judgment against them. With respect to nuisances, he had last month visited every house in the Borough, and gave verbal notice to occupiers to confirm with the byelaw with reference to the box-closet system, which caused many to comply with the notice, but he found there were many who had not done so. When he visited these during this month he had to the number of 143 served with a written notice to comply. Out of that number 27 had not taken action up to tbe present, and made all manner of excuses to him for their non-compliance. Under the circumstances, he wished to know how he was to act. He would also suggest to the Council that some steps be taken to alter the way in which hotelkeepers and others dispose of their slops and vegetable refuse. The hotels as a rule had a pit, some of which were covered, into which they threw this garbage. He would suggest that tbey be caused to remove it, and to fill up the pits, which were at present as offensive as the old system of pitclosets. After some discussion on the report, it was resolved that those who had not complied with the bye-law be summoned, and that those who had slop-pits be served with a notice to remove the nuisance.
