WHICH SHOULD IT BE ?
[To the Editor of the Herald.] Sir, — There is an old saying that " what is good for the goose is good for the gander.'' Now, this old maxim was never more exemplified than in this day's sitting of the R.M. Court, wherein an influential member of a firm of auctioneers says (and is verified by a number of gentlemen in the same profession) that a charge of _\ per cent, on £350, conducted and oarried on by a Gisborne auctioneer at Awanui, is very fair and legitimate charge or commission. Now, it seems to me most wondrous strange, that in a recent oase I had in Court with the same firm, that a charge of 5 per cent, commission was obtained on a £500 transaction, which required the amount of travelling expenses to the Gisborne wharf, which no doubt were very heavy, seeing that there were two or three hotels on the way. Now, sir, I would not trouble you with this effusion of my "grey goose quill " did I hot see a case of injustice in the proceedings, viz., if a Gisborne auctioneer is only allowed a _\ per cent, on a sale at Awanui, how is it that the same firm is allowed 5 per cent, in Gisborne for a sale of larger amount ? , Answer, and you will oblige. Yours, &c, O. Priestly.
