[PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, v This Day. The City Council rejected to the proposal to purchase a steam fire-engine. A very sudden death occurred at the National Hotel yesterday morning. A man named Robert Sales, who had slept there on the previous night, got up at 6.30. He had some brandy and went to bed again. When the waiter went to call him to breakfast he found him dead. AUCKLAND. This Day. The Captain of the ship Minister of Marine, failing to get a new crew, shipped some of liis old men that were in gaol. Tliey went quietly, but. declared they would do no work. The Bay of Islands coal mine is now turning out 270 tons per diem. CHRISTCHUROH. This Day. Recent experiments among railway employees in the Middle Island show that two and a half per cent, are unable to distinguish beyond black aud white. NA.PJER. This Day. An examination is shortly to be held of candidates for three Maori scholarships of £35 tenable for three years, at the end of which term the scholarship holder may compete for a University Scholarship of £50 tenable for one year. The money is from the interest of £3000 left by the late Sir Donald McLean for the purpose.
