BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

[To the Editor of the Herald.] Sir, — I. regret that the action, or rather I should say the inaction, of the above Society in the matter referred to in my former communication, leads me to the conclusion that the Society is a benevolent one only in name. The case to which I drew attention is one which should have been attended to many weeks back, being one demanding the assistance of any Benevolent Society in the place. The family is a very poor one, and quite unable to meet the charges entailed under the unfortunate circumstances. To the credit of the two medical gentlemen practising in the distirict I learn that they have been constant in their attendance on the poor, women and have performed a most difficult operation without hope of fee or reward. Had the Benevolent Society performed their duty in a like manner, it would have redounded to the credit of the management. If the public are called upon for subscriptions for any particular object, it is only just that the funds so raised should be appropriated when occasion arises. Why . this has not been done in the case referred to I am still at a loss to know. I am informed that your contemporary made some reply to my former letter, I think it would have been in better taste had the defence been published in your paper that I and your other readers might have seen it. — I am &c. , Mercy. [P.S. — The above, written 'several days ago, has been withheld in the hope that the Benevolent Society would have done something for the poor, suffering neglected woman referred to. As far as I can learn, nothing further than idle promises have been made, which, appears to me to be cruel in the extreme. I think it would be advisable to return the amounts subscribed to the donors that better use may be made of the money, if such cases as the one indicated are neglected. — M.
