ELECTION OF PUPIL TEACHERS FOR GISBORNE SCHOOL.

The following is t iken m substance from the minutes of the School Committee's book of a meeting held on Wednesday last — Mr. D. Johnson, of the Customs, m the chair. There were five applications from young ladies desirous of becoming pupil teachers. These were Miss R M. Forbes, Miss W. J. Rosie, Miss C. Thompson, Miss Harriet Flook, and MiBS F. B. Lysnar; Miss Forbes had passed her examination at Napier qualifying her for the duties of pupil teacher. Miss W. J. Rosie had previously been engaged >ia pupil teacher m the Auckland district, and was fully competent for the duties required of her. Miss Thomson had passed an excellent examination for a high class pupil scholarship, and was strongly recommended by the principal of the Gisborne School as pupil teacher. Miss Lysnar and Miss Flook had no recognised qualifications. At the committee meeting on Wednesday, the following candidates were nominated : — Miss Rosie, Miss Thomson, and Miss hysnar. . For Miss Rosie there were Mr. Ross and Mr. Adair, 2 votes ; for Miss Thomson there were the Rev. E. Williams, and Messrs. Bromley and Cuff, 3 votes ; for Miss Lysnar, there were Messrs. Ross, Adair, and Johnson, 3 votes ; but as Mr. Ross and Mr. Adair had voted for Miss Rosie, it was certainly not competent for them to vote for Miss Lysnar. Yet this very gross irregularity was not only permitted by Mr. Johnson, but it was further aggravated by Mr. Johnson, as chairman, uiving his casting vote m favor of Miss Lysnar, who he allowed lo have votes recorded her by two of the committee who had already voted for another candidate. It is understood that a memorial is being prepared t<» forward to the Commissioner of Customs praying that Mr. Johnson shall not be permitted' through his prejudices to retard the progress of tht children attending the Gisborne School ; and we cannnot help thinking such a memorial is a proper one.
