NAPIER. This Day. The scrutiny into the polling at the Napier election is being proceeded with to-day. An inquest was held yesterday at Farudon on the body of Richard Plantagenet Giffard, an old Ha'vke's Bay settler, and brother to the SolicitorGeneral of England, and a relative of Baron Giffard. On Wednesday last he went to vote at Olive, and after returning home went out between 5 and 6 o'clock with his man servant from his residence at Waitangi. On getting into the road, after passing through a paddock, he suddenly fell dowu dead. He had been drinking very heavily for a long time. The verdict was •' apoplexy, accelerated by intemperate habits." WELLINGTON.

The Maori ruiianga at Ohinemuri has closed its examination of witnesses, and will take another day or so to discuss its decision. The Sub-Inspßotor in charge is nresent with a warrant to arrest the offenders as soon as the decision of the chiefs is made known, but he is at a loss to know what to do if the decision is averse to their surrender to justice. He has communicated with the Native Minister for instructions. CHRISTOHURCH. This Day. Ashley election : — Moorhouse, 337 ; Fendall, 272 ; Cunningham, 60. Some dozen of rioters were up at the Police Court yesterday for throwing flour, creating a disturbance, and resisting? the police. The Magistrate, in consideration of the election excitement, dealt leniently with the offenders. Poole, confectioneer, was fined £2 for inciting the crowd to acts of violence, and the others were dismissed with a caution. DUNEDIN. This Day. Clntha election : — Thomson, 272 ; Jowett, 113. The Kaitan?ata coal company have sent a block of coal weighing two tons and a quarter to the Sydney Exhibition.
