VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

The monthly Inspection Parade of the J. Battery took place on Wednesday evening, ;ifc the Makaraka Hall. The parade state is as- follows. After the inspection, the corps was put through a prelininary course by instructor Huddle* ston, who informed them that it was necessary for their own sakes that they should practice what they had been taught on parade at home, during their leisure hours, so as to perfect themselves m the movements and enable him to instruct them m the more advanced portions of their duties on subsequent occasions. The Monthly Inspection of the Gisborne rifles and town detachment of J. Battery took place at McFarlanes hall on Friday evening. After the inspection, Captain Winter put the parade through a few movements, and owing to a political meeting of Mr. McDonald taking place at 8 o'clock the parade was dismissed to enable those members wishing to attend to do so. There was a very poor muster of the rifles, which speaks very ill for the interest they have m Volunteering. A District order was read, reminding Volunteers that it was imperative for them to attend the weekly instruction parades that take place every Tuesday for the Artillery, and on Friday for the rifles, so as to 'enable them to become efficient Volunteers. The annual return of Volunteers of England for 1878, shows maximum establishment, 241,263 ; efficient, 194,191 ; non-efficient, 9,022 ; enrolled, 203,213 j percentage of efficient to be enrolled, 95,55. The following resolution was passed by the New South Wales Rifle Association, and has been communicated to the Secretary of the New Zealand Association. ' ' That there shall be an Exhibition International match fired m Sydney, open to all countries or colonies, with the * Henry,' the N.S.W. military Rifle ten men a side ; also an Exhibition International Army Rifle Match, open to all teams of five men from any Rifle Association or Club, m any part of the world. One team only eligible from each association, and that suitable trophies shall be presented to the winners m each match." The firing will take place at the end of November, any competitors not having Henrys can have them supplied by the N.S.W. Association. The newly-formed company of Wellington Guards have adopted a counterpart of the uniform of the Grenadier Guards, and as an order for 70 suits has gone home, they may be expected to arrive m 4 months, as well as material for 50 more. Great interest is displayed, by their Captain, the Hon. G. R. Johnson, and other officers of the corps. A band has been secured under the leadership of Mr. Barber, and altogether a very successful future is promised.
