THE HISTORY AND MYSTERY OF A CLOTHES BASKET.
The Evening Post is being unmercifully chaffed by its contemporaries about a sensation article it lately published, half-a-column in length, headed "A Strange Mystery ! Singular Discovery on thk Reclaimed Land ! ! " It suggested that a "double murder" had been committed, adding : " The members o\ the detective force at length - have an opportunity of showing their ability to unravel mysteries, and of proving -who is the sharpest member of the force." The " mystery" was simply a basket of clean clothes from a laundry, which had been left by an expressman on the breastwork, intended for" H.M.S. Emerald, a boat having been expected to take them off to the ship. The police finding the basket unattended, took charge of it. The same evening some one was reported to have heard a woman scream somewhere in the neighborhood 1. Oh which foundation, the imaginative Post built up the fabric of a supposed "double murder;" The sudden transition from the mysteriously tragic to the supremely ridiculous has set all Wellington laughing at the expense of the Post. ,
