This Day. The City of Sydney with the 'Frisco mail arrived last nbht. She only brings details of news previously received by cable. Mr. W. C. Speipht, of the Thames, contests City East with Mr McCoah Clark in the Grey interests.
Mr. Start is out for City West in the Grey interest. Mr. Hobbs met the Frauklyn electors at Pokeno on Monday night, and received a vote of confidence. Mr. Sheehan addressed apubllc meeting yesterday on Native affars. He goes to the Thames to-day, thence overland to Tauranga to catch the Hinemoa for the South. . ; ...■-. It is believed that John Lundon and \ Mr. Williams will contest the Bay of Islands seat. In the walking match between O'Connor and Hendry, O'Connor gave in ex i hausted at the seventh mile, and the stakes were paid to Hendry. It is understood that Rewi proposes Major Te Wheoro for the western Maori districts. A polling place has been fixed at Ootea, so that the king natives may vote. J. E. Macdonald Esq., took his seat on the Bench as District Judge for the first time this morning. Mr. Brookfield, the Crown Prosecutor, and junior member of the bar, congratulated him on hiß appointment, and welcomed him on behalf of the bar. Judge Macdonald suitably responded. The Rev. David Bruce is a candidate for Marsden.
