WANGANUI.
This Day. A fire occurred on Sunday night, which destroyed Barton's boarding-house in Victoria Avenue. Barton's family and twenty lodgers lost everything. There is nothing to show how the fire originated. Spriggens' house and shop next door was in flames, but the brigade got it under. The house was insured for £200, and the f urniture for £250. Spriggens' stock was insured for £750. £450 in the Transatlantic office, and £300 in the South British. The stock was considerably damaged by fire and water. Another fire occurred on Monday night, which destroyed a house belonging to Armstrong lately arrived from Taranaki. The family escaped with their clothes. Everything else was destroyed. The house was insured in the Norwich. The election contest between Fox and Ballance is expected to be very close. Notwithstanding the rowdiness at Fox's meeting he has many supporters.
