Borough Endowment and Reserves.
Mb. Cahlaw Smith has this afternoon S laced the following telegrams from the fative Minister for publication m our columns. Mr. Smith, at the deputation meeting, with Mr. Sheehan, was appointed Hon. Secretary of ' the Local Progress Committee :— '. Auckland, August 23. Caklaw Smith, Esq., , ; . : ■: Gisborne. " . ■ . Be the Borough endowment, I have received the following reply from' the Secretary to the Premier • — " Gisbovne Borough endowment application,, with schedule of proposed blocks, only recently, received, now under consideration pf Lands and Survey Departments." The following is my reply: — "Please inform Lands and Survey Departments to let me know the locality of- 'the pro~ posed endowment before finally settling the same ; because if the. endowment be proposed to be given where originally offered by the Government, it had better be left' alone. The*' Borough is one of the few Boroughs m the Colony entitled to exceptional consideration, and if . the land be given for endowment,, it ought to be land of good quality, and easily turned to account. Please inform all parties of this and furnish papers with copy." John Sheehan.
Auckland, August 23. Carlaw Smith, Esq., Gisborne. Be Reserves, promised within the Borough of Gisborne. — The following is the reply which I have just received from Wellington, from the Lands. De-. partment : — • '■ Thirty-two acres of reserves were promised to the Gisborne Borough last year, and m July, 1878, the Commissioner of Lands was asked to prepare memo of transfer." I have again asked Mr. Tole what has been done m the matter. Perhaps it would expedite business if the Borough solicitor would prepare a transfer and submit it to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, signed by Mr. Elliott. I proposed, myself, to see Mr. Tole, and get the business closed at once. There ought to be no occasion to trouble the Borough solicitor, who probably have none. Please inform the Municipal authorities and give the matter as much other publicity as may be desirable. . John Shbehan.
Auckland, August 23. Carlaw Smith, Esq.; Gisborne. Be Gisborne Gaol, the following is the reply from Wellington regarding the above buiidiiig :— " Over £170 were spent on additions and repairs to ; Gisborne Gaol last year. I have now a requisition for six more cells at £20 each. Do you approve of this further expense - of £120.— (Signed) .R. G. Fountain." I intend to reply authorising construction of the cells at once. Please inform the Progress Committee. John Sheehan.
