THE PRESENT MINISTRY.
[To the Editor of the Herald.] Sir,— People of a malicious and uncharitable disposition might be inclined to cavil at the public having to pay the piper who plays before the late Ministry — m other words their being gaily carried about at the expense of ratepaj era. They might also say that it was scarcely fair towards the Opposition candidates ; for while the latter have to bear their own expenses, the late Ministry are furnished by their grateful country with a steamer, and every opportunity afforded them of feeling the electoral .pulse. Malicious people might say this, and would probably make unpleasant remarks about the Ministers being paid handsome salaries while m office, with allowance* for travelling, hinting at the same time that said allowance should come to an end with their dissolution as a Ministry ; but we, good charitable souls, do not think this. We are so grateful for their patriotic exertions (m pursuit of aforesaid salary, etc.,) and so highly delighted to see a real live statesman, that we bear the expense with a grateful sense of thankfulness at enjoy ing " the light of their countenances " so cheaply. —l am, &c, Tai Rawiiiti.
