THE LATE MEETING OF ELECTORS.

[To the, Editor of the Herald.]

Sir, — Many persons regretted the some- ' what abrupt conclusion to Tuesday's meeting, by the vote of thanks passed to Capt. Porter, as they were extremely, desirous of getting a definite answer to the question, , " Are we to. , accept your assertion that you are a Liberal m the ordinary acceptation of the term ?" As no political convictions were enunciated by Captain Porter, and as he ignored the existence of two distinct political parties, and as it is very desirable that this or indeed any constituency, should avoid returning a political Dugald Dalgetty, I desire the doubt to jbe cleared away ; for we know by the past experience of centuries that there must be two parties m the House, and that a man . to be of any practical utility to his constituents must identify himself with one or the other. It is vain to answer that there are no parties, that there is no Government, no Ministry, no policy. * Having premised at this length m order to make the enquiry Yw clear and intelligible as possible,* and to preclude the possibility of any evasion, I desire to ask Captain Porter if he will kindly reply through the medium of your paper, fer the benefit of the electors who wish the question to be answered as concisely and directly as possible. As there are but two parties m the House directly opposed to each other, as one of these parties is represented by the present Ministry, under the leadership of Sir George Grey, and as the present ""dissolution was granted for the purpose of testing the feeling of the country towards them. Will you pledge yourself to support them m the event of the reconsideration of the vote of want of confidence I—l am, &c. , W. H. Tucker. Gisborne, August 13, 1879.
