THE FOOTBALL MATCH.

GISBORNE V. NAPIER.

The weather whioh lost night threatened rain for to-day, broke early this morning, and with a westerly wind set m fine. The footballists' elongated countenances plainly indicated their feelings respecting the rain. The ground (it having been finally decided to contest the game on the Waikariae) was very sloppy, and we have spoken about the uneven state of the ground before. . -Nevertheless, both .teams seemed m" good spirits, and determined to do their level best. Taking the Napier team all round with the Gisborne team, they scarcely present such a good physique as our men. But from the manner they shaped on the Waikanae, when practicising there yesterday afternoon, we are rather of opinion that they will prove themselves much tougher antagonists than they appear. Most of them are all well tried football veterans, and it will give both sides a chance of exhibiting their skill and good play. But, however, with all good feeling to our visitors, we hope to chronicle m our issue of this evening a victory for our team.

Napier Team.

The following are the names of the gentlemen playing for Napier : — Messrs. Pilling (captain), Wood, Ridings, Caldwell, Ormond, Winter, C. Kennedy, Beauchamp, Sims, Bad cock, Brimner, Dewes, Smith, F. Kennedy, and Beamish. Umpire, R. Mowbray,

Gisbornb Team,

Messrs. Henderson (captain), Arthur F., Bond, Nolan, Image, Regan, Sunderland, White, Mill, Dunlop, Maior. Bloomfield, Te Kani, A. C. Arthur, and Humphries.

m, , „ 4.30 p.m. The ball was kicked off by the Gisborne Captain (Henderson) against the wind. The Gisborne team displayed some smart running, while the Napier excelled at collaring and backing up. After a very exciting contest, m which some excellent play was made, the victory was declared m favor of the Napier team, by two points. There was a disputed goal on each side, which was subsequently withdrawn.
