FOOTBALL.

Last Saturday afternoon being the, first occasion since the opening of the football season, there was a reasonably 1 good muster of players turned up, and a very good scratch match Was the result. Two new players, at leant to Gisborne, made their advent m the persons of Messrs. Bond and Sunderland, and jib they both played m good form and well, are, as will be seen m the names of the team chosen, elected to play against Napier, viz.: Messrs. Humphries, Henderson, Major, Arthur (2), White, Image, Bond, Sunderland, Regan, Bloomfield, Mill, Te Kani, DimlOp Jand Nolan, with Messrs. Skeet and Parau, as emergency men. It would occupy too much space to write individualising the play of each man informing him of his weak points and advising, but we would advise the team generally, that every man should try and imbue it into his head before commencing to play, that unity is half the battle, and that each do their utmost to back one another up, and never forget that all important "passing on" of the ball, which on Saturday seemed to be quite an obsolete part of the game. We imagine that the forwards will be F. Arthur, Henderson, White, Image, Bond, Regan, Sunderland, Nolan and Mill, a very respectable lot of forwards to, and the rest of the team back. As yet, no place has been decided where the match will be played, Mr. Thelwall's paddock:- being? too far from town, and tKe road to it impassable. The Recreation Reserve is too muddy ; the Waikanae, although a very rough piece of ground is the moat available. One more word, we would call attention to the players to see that the touch lines are properly marked out ; a nick cut m the turf is the usual mode adopted, and saves great inconvenience and loss of time m equivocating whether the ball or a player is m or out of touch. Wishing our men every success, we hope to record m bur Friday's issue an account of the mutch and of their victory.
