Legislative Council.
In the Legislative Council on Wednesday, replying to the Hon. Mr. Taiaroa, Hon. Col. Whitmore said the Maori prisoners would be tried m October m Iho ordinary course of the law. There was a proposal, however, to hold a special Court for the purpose ; but that had not yet been decided upon. Several hours were occupied discussing the motion by Hon. Mr. Waterhouse respecting the Thames- Waikato'Rail way. Hons. Waterhouse, Hall, Pollen, and Bell, strongly denounced the action of the Government as the grossest violation of the law, and a direct infraction of the intention of the legislature. Hon. Dr. Pollen said it was done to to buy political support. Hon. Colonel Whitmore defended the Government. The Council passed a resolution to the effect that the conduct of the Government was an indirect violation of the letter and spirit of the law. At the Evening Sitting the debate on the Loan Bill was commenced, bxit waa not concluded at 10 p. m. , when the Council adjourned.
