NEW PLYMOUTH.

This Day. The Constabulary went on Saturday to arrest the Natives ploughing Rowe's farm at Huriangi. The Natives made no resistence, and indeed, they had evidently expected being arrested, as some of them had had flax m their pockets for having their hands tied by the Constabulary. One Native procured an old ragged hat and broken boots, as he said the Government would give them new clothes. The Natives aro determined to show their belief m Te Whifi, by going as prisoners, as ho taunted them with being lukewarm m their faith. Twenty-seven prisoners, arrested at Bell Block, were dealt with summarily, and sentenced to two months' hard labor m Dunedin gaol, and bound over to keep the peace for twelve months each m £600 and two sureties of £300 each. A public meeting was held .on Saturday, when resolutions were passed to I the effect that fanatical adherents to Te Whiti are keeping the inhabitants m a state, of extreme anxiety, and calling upon the Government to commence good open roads between the Waingongoro and Houkotohua rivers, the Constabulary being utilised m protecting the workers, and aiding m the work ; and also that Hiroki and Te Whiti be arrested and brought to justice. A political meeting was subsequently held, when the action of Major Atkinson and Mr. Kelly was- approved of, and that of Mr. Carrington condemned.
