WELLINGTON.

This Day. Messrs. J. E. Brown, and George, will be the Government whips again this session. Seats have been secured for Mr. Ormond, George McLean, and Major Atkinson side by side, on the front bench of the Opposition side of the House. Only about 70 members had reached Wellington yesterday morning. It is expected that either Atkinson or Fox will second the Premier's nomination of O'Rorke for Speakership. Mr. Thomson, member for Clutha, is now a favorite for the vacant seat in the Cabinet, but it is doubtful whether any appointment will be made until a party caucus lias been held. Sir George Grey has been busy with preparing the Financial Statement ever since Ballance resigned. Of the Maori prisoners inspected by Mr. James Mackay, on Wednesday, 36 were friendly Natives in pre- | vious troubles, and only 26 were rebels. Those that arrived yesterday are more turbulent than the previous ones. Their chief man, named Whakawiria, refused to sweep out the room, or allow any of his men to do it. As he was very violent, he was ordered off to the guard room by Mr. Mackay, who was present. The* Natives who remained still refused to obey orders, and raised a cry of " down with the pakehas." Mr. Mackay sent for the guard who came in with fixed bayonets, and marched -the whole lot to the cells. Malta wiria is now confined by himself, and in future this lot of Natives will be strictly looked after.
