This Day. A meeting of journeymen coachbuilders and mechanics, was held on Wednesday, when ib was decided to make 'arrangements for a public meeting to petition the Government for the imposition of protective duties. Shopkeepers are projecting the formation of a Protection Society to keep a private, record of bad marks, and so guard • against marking bad bebts. The first sod of the Akaroa Railway was turned yesterday. At the Supreme Court His Honor remarked on the frequency of forgery cases, which he said, was largely attributable to the careless manner in which tradesmen cashed cheques. With reference, to arson cases he said it was highly necessary to protect Insurance Companies who were rightly deemed of great value to the community.
