CARLYLE.
This Day. The Natives on the other side of the Waingongoro River have decided upon resuming ploughing m large force. It has been asserted m various quarters that the Plains Natives hold j&loof from Te Whiti's ploughing policy, but during the last two or three days the Natives who were friendly have most of them become infatuated with Te Whiti, and ar-e leaving m great numbers daily for Parihaka. A reply has since been received that it was not true that Te Whiti says that the ploughmen have- been imprisoned, his prophecy is ended which is taken to mean that the matter passes into other hands, now supposed to be Titokowaru's. The journeymen ironworkers before taking any decided action will wait to see how the employers' proposals affect them, when put into practice. An influential meeting of Catholics was held last night at the Bishop's residence and a resolution to the following effect was carried unanimously :-!—" The meeting expressed the sense of injustice Roman Catholics are laboring under- by the operation of- the present Education Act, they being one-sixth of the population of the colony. By the operation of that act they are deprived of all benefits from state endowments for i Educational purposes. The meeting
also expressd deep sympathy with their co-i-eligionists now • about to meet m Dunedin to discuss what remedial measures should be taken to do away with the disadvantages under which they are laboring, and to appoint delegates to represent them m Dunedin. The delegates have not been chosen. Yesterday the Premier had a long interview with Sir William Fitzherbert. Mr. Ballauce and Mr. Macandrew also called m and saw Sir William. It is understood efforts are being made to get Mr. Gisborne to join the Cabinet, and that is it not unlikely they will be successful The next seat rests between Mr. Moorhouse.
