Excitement at Hawera.
HAWERA. This Day. j A Republic was established here yestei*day, and Mr. Livingstone elected the first President. He intends to carry out the peace policy, by quietly preventing destruction of property by I deluded Natives \mtil the Government are m a position to occupy the Waimate Plains. He has chosen an ejectment committee, comrosed of cool-headed men. Theiv duty is to remove Native ploughmen quietly. The Light Horse are under arms covering the ejecting party m case of a surprise. About thirty settlers by turn patrol round the President's house. Yesterday there was great excite.ment here upon the rumor that a hundred armed Maories were covering approach to the Waingongoro Bridge. The Volunteers turned out to a man, but their services were not needed. The Hawera Rifles, under Lieuts. Watts and Johnson, are under arms m town, ready for any emergency. j There is no knowing what the next move of Te Whiti will be, but it is doubtful whether he will get the same ploughmen to go on the land again. A new crew will probably be told off.
