COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Council met last evening. Present : Woodbine Johnson, Esq., (in the chair), Councillors Locke, Villers, Graham, and Reevea. The usual preliminary business of reading the minutes and the correspondence which had passed out of the office, having been gone through the Council proceeded to business. It was decided to accept Mr. Hamon's terms regarding the deviation of the road at Kaitcratahi, viz., to fence the road on each side and at each end to the river with puriri posts and seven wires. Ordered that the Engineer communicate with the Inspector of Surveys, Napier re proposed deviation of road Waikakarika Valley. The following tenders (as previously wired) were received for the Arai Bridge : Agnes McKay, £1,784 16s. Norman Mclnnis, £1,475 11s. s£d. The latter was accepted. Ordered, — That tenders be called : For erection of culvert on the Opotiki Road near Waikohu ; for forming, deepening ditches, and removing water tables on road from Roseland Hotel to the Royal Oak. Several payments amounting in the aggregate to £500 were ordered. The Engineer was instructed to report on proposed road from Scott's crossing to Mungatu. A long discussion ensued as to the feasibility of constructing a bridge over the Waipaoa River at Scott's crossing. The prevailing opinion appeared to be that for the present the bridge at Matawhero must suffice. Ultimately it was decided that the Engineer should report as to the most desirable position for, and probable cost of, the proposed bridge, and that the Council should endeavor to obtain assistance from the Government for this purpose. Proposed by Councillor Reeves, and seconded by Councillor Locke — That £150 should be spent as approved by the Engineer in rendering the coast road passible from Kaiti to Anawra. For : Councillors Graham, Reeves, Locke, and the Chairman. Against : Councillor Villers. • Ordered. — That the Engineer may employ an assistant in the field, to grade the Wairoa track inland via Patutahi.
