PALMERSTON NORTH.

' This Day. Last night the Palmerston sawmills, owned by Richtar, Naiinestad, and Co, were discovered to be on tire. The flames spread so quickly, that in two' minutes the whole building and stacks of timber were in one sheet of flame. The owners had just been fixing a new engine, and setting a new boiler, which cost £600. This was to be started, going in a few days. No idea how the fire originated. The plant and Btock are insured 1 for £2,000 and £800 respectively, both in the South British ; about £100 in the North British, and the balance in the New Zealand, but the amount only half covers the loss as the mill was one of the finest in the district and there was an unusually la^ge stock of valuable timber.
