COUNTY COUNCIL.

Friday Evening. Present : Councillor Woodbine Johnson (Chairman) and Messrs. Porter, Villers, Locke, and Wi Peri, Councillors ; the County Clerk and Connty Engineer, both present. Minutes read and passed. Correspondence which had passed through the office read and passed without comment. Mr. Howard Strong, m a note returned the Council's notices demanding payment of rates. Mr. Strong denied owning any property out of the Borough. The Clerk was ordered to proceed for the recovery of the same. Mr. William Cooper wrote, that having expended £87 m making a road from Goldsmiths' Crossing to Mangatu, asked the Council to re-imburse him one-half. The Engineer was directed to report the nature and legality of Mr. Cooper's claim. A circular was received ■ from the Chairman of the County of Coromandel asking that the question of hospital contribution be not entertained until after nextsession, m order to assist m having all the Hospitals of the Colony maintained out of the Consolidated Fund. Councillors expressed their willingness to assist m the object ; but their opinion Avaa that the Colonial Government would not give more than was promised — namely £ for £. Letter from Mr. Williams, Tologa Bay stating, that he killed from three to five sheep a week, for the convenience of his customers. He was not a butcher, and the small amount of meat he killed would not allow him to pay for a slaughtering license. The Council thought that for the present it should not be insisted that Mr. Williams take out a license. Letter from Mr. E. W. Knowles, stating he had no objection to the deviation of a road through sections Nos. 102 and 103, Patutahi district, on the terms contained m the County Clerk's letter. A petition was presented by Councillor Villers from settlers at Ormond. The petition prayed the immediate attention and inspection of the slaugh-ter-house at Ormond belonging to Mr. Charles Davis, as it was kept m a most disgraceful state, emitting a stench most horrible to reside near. The Muhnnga Creek, where the settlers obtain water for household purposes, is made a cesspool by the offal and blood running into the creek. Petition received. Letter from Joseph Hamon, dated Ormond, stating that he would allow

the alteration of the present road leading to Kaiteratahi on the condition that the Council erect a substantial fence botli sides of the road ; and as compensation for the land to be used the Council to pay at the rate of £25 per annum. The sum of £95 was directed to be paid to Captain Ferris as valuator, the Council disagreeing with the valuators clause of £ per cent commission on £44,422, which would have amounted to £111. A communication was read from Mr. Knowles, Under Secretary for Public Works, stating that the £500 for a road from Gisborne to Wairoa must be spent on that road only, and not to be diverted to any other road purposes. The Clerk was instructed to write a letter to Mr. Baker, to ask that a deviation may be made of the road from Patuiahi to the Wairoa.
