GREAT EXCITEMENT.
DISCOVERY OF GOLD IN GISBORNE.
Saturday, Afternoon 3 p.m. This afternoon information was brought to our office that rich gold had been discovered m Gisborne, m proof of which a fine nuggett was shown us, weighing about 15 pennyweights. It was found m a deposit of blackened sand, and the informant told our reporter there was no doubt but that where the nugget was taken from more gold would be found. The news speedly got wind, and there was great excitement. The discovery was telegraphed to the principal towns m the Colony. When, however, later m the afternoon, a searching enquiry as to the whereabouts of the gold discovery, it was ascertained that Mr. Nasmith, the jeweller, had been sifting the debris of his fire, when he had found the nugget shown us, together with other melted pieces of gold, which had formed a portion of burnt-out jewellery. The reporter expresses himself annoyed that he should have been so sold.
