RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. This Day.

Makoare was charged by Hirini Tatae with an aggravated assault; on the race course on Friday 30th January. The assault which was of a very savage nature was fully proved, the defendant hearing unmistakeable impressious on his person. In support of the oharge, during the hearing 'the case it was
alleged by defendant that the whole case arose out of the stealing by plaintiff of a case of champagne, and shared with defendant among others. Mihi a native woman corroborated Makoare's statement and Hirini will be charged with said offence to-morrow at 11 a. m Maoare was fined £2. Breach of Licensing Act. Mr. T. Vaughan was charged with having two public bars within the Meaning of the Act for the sale of alcoholic liquors. Evidence was taken, and infringement of the Act proved by the police. The defendant stated that there were similar bars m various Auckland hotels, and were permitted without interference. The Bench fined the defendant £5.
