GISBORNE SCHOOL.

To the Editor of the Evening Herald. Sir, — In your issue of Friday last you appear to have gone out of your way somewhat to do the Gisborne School a most unjustifiable injury. In common with many others, I was very much surprised to find that such damaging statements were written m a local journal which professes to have the well-being of the community at heart. They are simply untrue, and I consider it my duty, after having inspected the school and grounds, to give them an unqualified denial. I admit that the closets would be better for removal further from the school, and that the use of chloride of lime would be beneficial, but it is false to say that the atmosphere is so impregnated with pestilential vapour as to render it so fatal to health as to demand that the school be closed and fumigated for a fortnght. There are no cesspits on the grounds ; the nightsoil is not exposed to view, but is buried on each occasion of removal with great care. I am also informed by Mr. Maberly that no one from the HercM office either visited the School and closets, or made the enquiries or received the information on which you have thought proper to base one of the most unwarrantable aspersions on a public institution that ever appeared m public print. As the committee will have to take official cognizance of the matter, you will give this letter insertion, so as to remove, as far as possible, the false impression you have, it may be unwittingly, created. — I am, &c, 0. D. BItfNETT, Chairman of Committee.
