PATEA BOROUGH COUNCIL

OEDINAEY MEETING Tlie ordinary monthly meeting of the Patea Borough Council was held on Monday, His Worship the Mayor presiding. Crs. Naismith, Langslow, Bromic 1 ;.-, Bamsbottom and FullerSandy s were also present. Cr. McKenna, who recently underwent an operation for appendicitis, was granted leave of absence from the meeting. His Worship stated that he had recovered sufficiently 'to return to his homo that day. It was decided, on the motion of Cr. Naismith, that a letter of sympathy with Cr. McKenna be sent to him with regard to his illness. Correspondence was read as under:— COBBE SB ONDE N C E From tie Department of Health, advising that inspector W. H. Boy had replaced Inspector W. F. Steele, .who had gone into camp. It was unanimously resolved that Air. Boy be appointed health inspector during Air. Steele’s absence. Airs. A. McKenna was granted permission to remove a trough from Pigment Street to her Harbour Board leasehold. Alessrs Haghson’s Ltd. were granted permission to erect a sign over the footpath. The Boy-Scouts were granted permission to hold a shop day on Saturday next. The Blanket Society were granted permission to hold a shop day on December Sth. The Public "Works Department wrote asking if the Electrical Wiring Inspector had been appointed as required by the regulations. ■The Town Clerk said the matter was dealt with in the electric light; committee’s report. The Patea County Council wrote stating that they laid appointed an emergency committee to deal with any question that may arise and would be willing to co-operate with the council . Deceived. The Patea Pictures Ltd. wrote asking (hat tlic company be exempt from the by-law necessitating the new theatre they proposed erecting being built in brick or concrete.

Cr. Bromley suit! lie was opposed to any alteration being made to the existing by-law. He would move that the council adhere to the present by-law. Cr. If the Government was agreeable as the letter stated to the hall being built in other than brick or concrete it would be quite all right. Cr. Kamsbottom said he thought they .should accede to the request. The by-laws stated that if*, an existing building in wood were added to or altered, the additions or alterations could be of wood too. The Town Clerk said this was not so, the by-laws expressly stated that any additions or alterations to any building in. the brick area must be of brick or concrete. The Mayor stated that it could not be claimed that the new hall would be an addition or alteration to the old buildings already existing on the site. The hall mould be an entirely new building altogether. Cr. Fuller-Sandys said he agreed with Cr. Langslow that if the Government agreed to the building proposed by the Picture Company, it wouldbe satisfactory. The Exhibition buildings in Wellington had been built without’ bricks, j The Mayor pointed out that Cr. Bromley’s resolution was unnecessary as tiie by-law could not be departed from unless repealed. Cr. Bromley withdrew his resolution in favour of the following, which was moved by Cr. Naesmith, and carried unanimously.— "That the Patea Pictures bo informed that the council cannot legally grant their request,- that there is an abundance of material to' be found locally to enable the new building to be erected i’n accordance with the Borough bylaws, ami until such time as the Patea Pictures can build in accordance .with the Borough W-laws the council will be. prepared toymeet• them by allowing them to continue to use the Town Hall on terms to be arranged.” An invitation from the local Centennial Committee for' councillors and their wives to attend the opening of the children’s park at the BeacTi on Saturday, December‘ 2nd, was accepted with thanks. , „ ,-On (he motion of Cf: Nuismilh seconded by Or. The Town Clerk submitted a brief report on the question of the collection of heavy traffic foes, and recommended that the council adhere to its original intention to collect its own fees
