The Trial of Carter. CiunsTonrucn, May 111. Tho trial of Carter for manslaughter in connection with tho Rakaia railway accident began iu tho Supremo Court this morning - . Carter pleaded not guilty. lie is defended by Mr Joynt. Mather (Carter’s fireman) said thick weather caused them to miscalculate tho position of the .tail lights of tho first train; that Carter tried to keep outside the station limits,but tho brakes did not appear to hold, and after tho collision Carter blamed the brake principally. A. L. Beattie, locomotive superintendent, said lie examined tho engine shortly after the accident and on the following Monday, and found the engine and brake iu perfect order. lie estimated tho speed between Chertscy and Rakaia at 1-5 miles [an hour, and Carter should not have exceeded thi miles. Thu case will ho resumed to-morrow.
Later Intelligence. Carter Found “ Not Guilty.” CuaisTcii.uacn, Juno 1. Tho jury found a verdict of u Not Guilty ” in tho case of Carter, charged with manslaughter in connection with tho llakaia railway disaster.
