HORSELESS CARRIAGES.
At the invitation of the Lord Mayor (Master of the Coachbuilders’ Company), the opening meeting of the annual summer gathering of the Institute of British Carriage manufacturers was held recently it Ihe Mansion-house, Mr G, J. Jacobs, who presided, remarked that they stood in the outer confines of a great departure, fhe leaders of their industry regarded the advent of the autocar with much interest and expectation, hut without panic or alarm. If the carriages of the future were increasingly light, easy, and elegant they have nothing to fear from, but for mauy reasons they would welcome, the newcomer. In this friendly contest, or rather association, with autocars they had many points in their favour. The result of any satisfactory process in the adoption of self-propelled vehicles must be the liberation of the horse from its heavier and trade burdens, and this, for the present at any rate, would bo to the advan tage of the manufacturer of horsedrawn vehicles of the lighter kind.
